Romans 8: A Chapter of Victory, Assurance, and Glory
Introduction
The Road to Romans 8
The apostle Paul begins Romans 8 with the powerful word, “Therefore.” It’s a word he often uses to signal a turning point, pointing the reader back to the foundation he’s already laid. In Ephesians 3:1, Paul writes, “For this reason, I, Paul…”—and the reason is found in the truths of the previous chapter. In the same way, when we reach Romans 8:1, Paul isn’t just summarizing a few recent verses—he’s drawing a line all the way back to Romans 1.
For seven chapters, Paul has carefully and brilliantly unpacked the human condition and God’s answer through Jesus Christ. He begins with the universal problem of sin (Old Adam), (Romans 1–3), showing how every person—Jew or Gentile—is under sin’s (Old Adam’s) curse. Then, in Romans 3:21 and onward, the spotlight turns to the good news: that righteousness comes by faith alone in Jesus Christ, not by the works of the law. Romans 4 and 5 exalt in the truth that we are justified by faith alone and now have peace with God. Romans 6, beautifully explains the believers identification with the Lord Jesus. In Chapter 7, Paul explains the battle between our new life in Chris and the ongoing struggle with the flesh.
And then… Romans 8 bursts forth.
It is the high point of the letter—a chapter overflowing with assurance, hope, and the Spirit-filled life. It declares victory for every believer—not because of what we’ve done, but because of who Christ is and what He has done for us. There’s no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (v.1). There’s no separation from the love of God (v.39). And every verse in between is filled with rich truth to strengthen your walk, renew your mind, and deepen your love for God.
